6 Super Cool Facts You Didn't Know About Invisalign®

You’re considering Invisalign® because you’re tired of feeling self-conscious about your smile. Invisalign is an easy, pain-free way to get more perfectly aligned teeth without anyone knowing. But Invisalign’s advantages go beyond a beautiful smile.

You know that Invisalign® straightens crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth to create a healthier and more beautiful smile. But Invisalign has an array of advantages that extend past its stellar aesthetic results and the easy, pain-free way it realigns your teeth.

At the office of Mohsena Ahmad D.D.S., FICOI, DICOI in San Jose, California Dr. Ahmad checks the health of your teeth and gums during your annual dental exam. If you have a misalignment that affects the function of your bite or the beauty of your smile, we may recommend correcting your teeth with Invisalign. Here’s why.

1. Invisalign is fast

If you had braces as a child, or know someone who did, you might think it takes several years to get a more perfect smile. However, Invisalign is much faster — and a lot more comfortable — than traditional braces. Depending on the severity of your misalignment, a more beautiful smile is just 6-24 months away with Invisalign.

Even better, you get to know what your final smile looks like before your treatment is finished. When you receive your aligners, we show you an animation that illustrates your teeth moving from their present position to their goal alignment.

Invisalign quickly fixes all of the most common alignment problems, and even some uncommon ones, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Cross bite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Twisted teeth
  • Teeth that haven’t fully erupted

Depending on your needs, we may place small “handles” called SmartForce® Attachments on your teeth that accelerate your tooth repositioning and help create a more perfectly aligned smile.

2. Invisalign is easy

You simply wear a set of custom designed, clear aligners for 20-22 hours per day, taking them out for eating and cleaning. You may also remove them for photos or other special events. Every week or two, you switch to a new set of aligners that gently nudge your teeth closer to their goal alignment.

Cleaning Invisalign is simple. You can brush them with a soft toothbrush, cool water, and Castile soap or soak them in our special crystals that also prevent yellowing.

3. Invisalign improves your jaw alignment

When your teeth are crooked, your bite may be, too. A misaligned bite causes you to chew with more force on one side of your mouth, creating undue pressure on that jaw.

Eventually, you may develop pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). You might even notice that your jaw pops or clicks when you open it, or it could get stuck. By correcting your tooth alignment, Invisalign also corrects your jaw alignment, which may resolve your TMJ symptoms.

4. Invisalign protects your teeth

The Invisalign aligner trays are made of a patented, clear composite material called SmartTrack® that gradually eases your teeth into a healthier position. The trays completely cover your teeth, including the surface of your molars.

If you have a tendency to clench your jaw, or unconsciously engage in nighttime teeth grinding (i.e., bruxism), the aligners separate your teeth and prevent them from grinding against one another. The aligners prevent you from wearing down your molars or creating uneven front teeth from grinding and clenching.

5. Invisalign keeps your teeth in place

Adults may be frustrated to learn that all of their painful orthodontic experiences from their tween and teen years were undone by their teeth gradually migrating back into a misaligned state. The Invisalign team recognizes that teeth may shift on their own over time. That’s why they recommend wearing a Vivera® retainer each night.

The Vivera retainers are made from the same comfortable materials as the Invisalign® aligners. You simply brush your teeth before bed, insert the retainers, and then remove and clean them in the morning.

6. Even children benefit from Invisalign

You no longer have to wait until your child loses all their baby teeth before correcting their tooth and jaw alignment with Invisalign. In fact, early orthodontics, placed while a child still has baby teeth, helps permanent teeth grow in straighter, so they need less correction later.

Children as young as 6-10 years may benefit from what’s known as Phase I Invisalign treatment. During this stage, the Invisalign aligners:

  • Create more space for incoming teeth
  • Correct any present misalignments
  • Prevent pre-existing bite problems from worsening
  • Improve your child’s smile and jaw function
  • Help eliminate thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
  • Broaden a narrow dental arch

Phase I treatment lets your growing child feel proud of their smile, even as they lose baby teeth and gain their permanent teeth. If they need to further correct their alignment once all of their permanent teeth have erupted, Phase II treatment is usually shorter and easier.
