A dental filling is a stuffing a dentist does to fill the holes, cavity areas, and shape worn-out teeth. It is done after cleaning the affected area and by filling in the desired material in its place.

A general dentist can perform filling and help you rescue cavities and pain that it causes.

There are several fillings available to you to choose from:

Ceramics are resistant to stains and cost as much as gold. They are durable, as researchers have found that they can last up to 15 years.

Glass ionomer is made of acrylic and a specific type of glass material. They can last for five years and hence are used for children.

Composite is the most commonly used filling. They give a natural look to your teeth. The ingredients are mixed and placed directly into the cavity and are then hardened. They can last up to 10 years.

Gold Filling is expensive and is used in the molar region due to its color.

A silver filling is less expensive than a composite. It is durable. However, amalgam fillings can create a greyish hue to the surrounding tooth structure.

Porcelain is called inlays or Onlays. They are fabricated to order in a lab and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain filling generally covers most of the tooth. Their cost is quite similar to gold.

Uses of Dental Filling

  • They help restore tooth decay.
  • Comfort in chewing and prevents further tooth damage.
  • To restore worn out or eroded teeth.
  • Injured or broken teeth where enamel has chipped off, potentially exposing the tooth to decay.

You and your dentist can decide which type of filling is best for you, considering the size and location of the cavity, your dental history, cosmetic concerns, and cost. If you have any questions about fillings, ask your dentist.
